RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAMME
The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) in its review of the
personal and professional developmental and educational needs of the
Jamaican workforce has decided to add major academic programmes in the
human services professions. These are in Applied Psychology and Social
Work. The programme in Social Work offers courses leading to the
Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree. It combines humanities and general
studies offerings with social work modules to prepare individuals for
entry into direct human service professional positions. The programme is
designed to prepare competent, professional, ethical social work
generalists. Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Applied Psychology
students learn to work collaboratively in a variety of settings and
learn skills including engagement, assessment, intervention, and
evaluation at various levels (CSWE Standards). Students will learn
supplementary skills such as service planning, case management, problem
solving, community outreach and organizing, advocacy, research and
networking. The programme is designed to produce graduates who will work
for the well-being of their clients, advocate for the development and
implementation of appropriate and relevant social policies, and
contribute positively to the administration of organizations.
PROGRAMME OUTCOME
The exit outcomes of this programme offer students the opportunity to
enter the professional practice for those who have an interest in
working with people, and in addressing social and community issues and
problems. Social workers play a vital role in developing a society based
on social justice, and aim to stimulate action to change the social
circumstances of individuals and groups who are disadvantaged. At
completion of their theory and practice, graduates are expected to be
able to function in primary as well as secondary social work settings
and become members of professional bodies and seek appropriate license
to practice.
