Business with a major in Education Studies

The offering of Business with a major in Educational Studies aims to produce cohorts of educators who will play their role in preparing students at the secondary school level to bring about this social change through business. There is a deficiency at the secondary school level, of educators prepared to implement this type of programme.

Through the learning of Business Studies, students in schools can realize their true calling as entrepreneurs, investors and business professionals. The literature points out that content from Business Studies curriculum in school can enable students to earn additional income, and prepare them for grown-up life as well as self-independence (Industry Today, 2021).

This Bachelor of Science in Business with a major in Educational Studies is designed to prepare students in secondary schools contribute to the improvement of the Jamaican economy, thus raising the living standards of various households in Jamaica.

Graduates of this programme will be suited for roles including:
Career in curriculum development
Career in education policy development
Facilitating business courses at the secondary or junior college level
Community or Social Service Specialist
Specialist in the use of technology to enhance learning
The programme will be offered in the ‘blended’ and ‘online’ modalities, thereby catering to students locally and internationally.

Modality 1: Fully Online
Content Curriculum will be delivered Online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous modules. The programme will utilise content modules, observational, practicum and project-based learning assessments.

Modality 2: Blended
Some of the content curriculum courses in the programme will be delivered face-to-face, in-person at campus locations, while other courses within the programme will be offered Online synchronous and/or asynchronous. The programme will utilise Mid-Semester and End-of-Semester summative assessments of the content curriculum, observational, practicum and project-based learning assessments.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES
Graduates of the BSc in Business with a major in Educational Studies degree programme are prepared to be strong educators in their community.

They will be able to:
1. Implement critical pedagogies, connect theory to practice in secondary education, and engage with different learners across various educational settings; 2. Design and facilitate culturally sustaining curriculum
3. Create, use critical thinking and research skills to solve problems;
4. Propose solutions that will improve teaching and learning
5. Empower learners to achieve through engaging relationship and respect

DURATION:
UCC degree programmes are four-year programmes. This may be reduced by up to two years, if a student gains Advanced Standing with an appropriate Associate of Science degree or equivalent qualification.
